Since I was taking everything down from Christmas and the new year is in full swing, it gives you that chance to clean and start a new. So since I was clearing the mantel of all the Christmas glitter, I thought it was a good a time as any to give it a new look. Not completely, but somewhat. I was tired of looking at the same view everytime I came into the family room. I always looked at it never quite happy with the way it was decorated. So, I changed things up a bit and ended up being quite happy with the way it turned out.
I have always found it a bit of a challenge to decorate this mantel. I designed it and had it custom made. The two ends that the scrolls are holding up come out from the wall about 18" so there is a lot of space on either end to place accessories. It is also quite a heavy looking mantel with a lot of moulding detail so if the accessories are too small it just looks silly and out of proportion.I always enjoy and find it interesting to see how others decorate their mantels, whether it is friends, other designers/decorates, magazines etc. I find it to be a great spot to be creative and really make a statement.

You have a beautiful mantel. I have a hard time decorating mine too.
lovely mantel. we have three in our house (not quite so ornate, but original to our 130-year-old house). i can never figure out how to decorate them. the one in our family room usually holds the things i find on the floor that don't belong (chapsticks, misc. toys, etc.). not very "decorative" but functional.
