Little Black Skirt and Some Handbags

(Blogger is not co-operating - it will not upload my skirt picture. I will try again later)

This is the second time I have made this skirt. The first time I used a multi-colour cotton floral and it turned out really nice. Wore it alot during the summer. Actually, come to think of it, I have made this skirt 3 times. The first time I just used a broadcloth to test out the sizing. I, for the life of me, cannot figure out pattern sizing on adults. With my measurements, it said to use a size 14 pattern, so I adjusted the pattern to have a size 14 waist and size 12 hips, (or the other way around, I can't remember now) Anyway, I don't know what they are talking about, cause that in no way fit me. It was gigantic! So, I did my own sizing and said, "I am going to use the size 8 pattern." Sure enough it worked! The skirt was so easy to make. It has a side zipper and godets. It called for 6 of them, but after making them in the first one, I preferred to only have 2 godets in the front and 2 in the back. So, I learned something new that I had never done before (godets) and my sister-in-law ended up with a free new summer skirt! Oh I also lined this one which was very easy, but took alot of time since you are making two skirts in one and the fabric I used this time was a pique. Not bad to use, but very thready, so you have to serge all your pieces or it will fray to nothing.

First attempt...

So, I have these round bamboo handles that I have had for awhile now and wanted to use them up. The purse above was suppose to have them on the outside of it fastened in place with tabs of the same fabric. Yeah, well, that didn't work and ended up looking like this. The two small pictures show the inside with a ribbon closure and the stitch detail about 2" down from the top. It ended up turning out quite nice. I lined it in blue with a zipper pocket inside. I also put a cardboard bottom in, which makes it stand up quite nicely. I heavyweight interfaced and felt interlined it to make it sturdy.

Second attempt...

This is the second attempt to use my round bamboo purse handles, and notice they are still not used. When I put the purse together, I did a trial run on the handles to see how they would work. They looked great, but when I went to open the bag, it was way too small to fit anything into it. So, I scrapped the handles on this attempt and ended up putting in cord rope, as handles. That idea took awhile, I wasn't sure how to deal with joining the rope together. I didn't really want to show a knot, so I ended up sewing the two ends together and covering it with material and fit it to where it will rest on the shoulder. It actually turned out pretty nice. I lined it. It's just a simple bag with no inside pockets.

I haven't given up on the bamboo handles, I will have to try again, but in the meantime, I am onto APRONS!
