I had a client come to me a little while ago and asked me if I could make her a pillowcase dress. Her friend had a baby girl and she wanted to give her something special that no one else would. The friend already had 2 boys so the third, being a girl, was a special gift. My client had told me how much her friend had complimented her when she saw her daughter wearing the pillowcase dresses I had made previously and how she always gets tons of compliments from complete strangers when her daughter and her are out and about. (Don't you just love it when you hear great stuff like that?!) Anyway, since everyone was crazy about the pillowcase dress, she thought it would make the perfect gift.
I didn't have any pillowcases on hand, but I told her that was no problem. I had lots of fabric to choose from and I could easily make up the dress making it up from fabric that she chose. She thought that was great and thrilled that I could do it. I am quite happy with how it turned out and I think she will be too.
Since the baby was only born a couple of weeks ago, she wanted it so that she could start wearing it next summer. She will almost be a year.
I think this is a great growing outfit, because when they are small they can wear it as a dress and if it is the right colour and fabric weight, you can wear it all year round. Put a long sleeve shirt under it and you can wear it in the winter. Put a short sleeve shirt or blouse on with it and wear it in the spring or fall and of course wear it as it is and you have a cool summer dress. I had my Sunshine try it on who is going to be 9 in one more week and it fit her perfectly as a blouse.
So this outfit can be worn from the age of 1 as a dress and up to the age of 9 and possiblely 10 as a top. I would definitely call this an investment piece, wouldn't you?

Love that fabric.
I agree it is an investment piece. Very transitional.
