Do you ever feel like you are not being taken that way? Why is that... because you are working at home and not for a big corporation, in an office tower, behind a desk? Is it because you created your own business and you were staying at home anyways with the kids, so it's just something extra to keep you busy? No, it is not. I am sure any Stay at Home Mom will attest, that they do not need something "extra".
Why can't they see that you have built something from the ground up and that it is still growing and that you love what you do and that you take it very seriously! Why, when they call you on the phone and ask what you are doing, they are like "oh, you are sewing again?! What do they think? That this business will run itself and the products will get made and sold magically? DO they, not go to work everyday?!
What about when they call and ask if you are home. They automatically think that they can come over. Hello! You may be at home, but you are working, this is where it is. You are not sitting here doing nothing. Do they get visitors at any time at their office tower desk? No, because they are working! I would never dream of calling them up and telling them I am coming over for a visit. They would think I was nuts.
I heard this one recently. Oh when the summer is over and the kids are back in school, you will have so much free time. What is that? No I won't! I can get busier and focus more on work instead of trying to juggle entertaining two kids being home all day plus all the other stuff a Work at Home Mom does.
When I hear stuff like that it hurts and it is frustrating, because then I know that those people don't take what I do seriously. I feel like I have to prove myself or explain what I am doing.
I am sure like all mom-entreprenuers and entreprenuers in general, take what they do very seriously. You may not be making the big corporate pay cheque or be working in the concrete jungle but nevertheless, you are WORKING! Harder then they will ever know, because it is all on you. You are the one that will make it or break it. Lets face it, entreprenuership(is that a word?) is not an easy thing and it would be so easy to just throw your hands in the air and say "forget it". It's sticking with it and believing in yourself that is the most difficult. Especially when you hear comments like the ones above or you continue to have doors closed in your face. You have to be strong and say "you can do this" and "what you are doing is important and has meaning". You trudge on and keep going and try to ignore the negative stuff and fully appreciate the few people that do take what you do seriously and commend you for it.
I know this was a bit of a rant, but at the same time I know there is truth to this and that I am not alone in feeling this way. There are so many talented people out there doing such a great job. It's not easy what we do and I think you are terrific for it!

I'm sure it is incredibly frustrating when people don't understand that you are working when you are sewing. You just happen to have a great work environment and love your job (and they don't).
Maybe you the kids are in school, you should set work hours and not answer the phone during those times. (Do you have caller ID?) And have your answering machine say they are reaching your house AND "Silver Lining Designs." Maybe they'll start to get a hint.
Hmmmmmmm I am far to familiar with your feelings......
